Ethernet

Ethernet jack, a white rectangle jack with four ports for ethenret cables to be connected

The UMN’s high-speed Gigabit Ethernet is 14x faster than the national average! You should use your Ethernet connection to get the most out of those incredible speeds by using your Ethernet connection.

It's simple! All you need to do is to plug an Ethernet (RJ45) cable into the Ethernet jack in your room, and you’re good to go.

  • Most halls now have access points for wireless and wired internet access, as seen in the image to the right. To access your residence’s Gigabit Ethernet, plug the Ethernet cord into your computer and then plug the other end into any of the 3 rightmost ports.
  • Some halls still use wall jacks to access the Ethernet. In these residences, plug your cord into the orange-colored jacks.
  • One Ethernet jack is provided for each resident. If you need extra connections in your room, wired switches are allowed, but Housing & Residential Life does not have any to give to residents.
  • Residents must bring their own Ethernet cable. We recommend bringing a cord that is at least fourteen feet (14') long.

WiFi

If you are not using Ethernet, residents should connect their laptops and smartphones to eduroam using their complete University email and password.

Eduroam is a secure, world-wide roaming access service. It is the fastest and most secure WiFi on campus, and it allows you to gain secure WiFi access using your University of Minnesota email address and password when visiting other participating institutions. For more information, please review the following web pages:

Warning! The use of personal wireless access points or routers is not allowed in our residence halls and apartments per the Residential Network Agreement (below). They interfere with the WiFi used by all residents. As such, your internet access could be disabled if you use a personal WiFi access point.

Connecting Devices

You're able to use our WiFi to connect wireless devices like a Roku or PlayStation, but you need to register your device with the University first.

You do not need to register laptops or smartphones unless otherwise specified.

WiFi Calling

By updating the settings on mobile devices or smartphones, you can utilize WiFi calling for the best mobile experience. Review the instructions below by cellular carrier and the general guides for Android and iOS/Apple. Contact Technology Help if you have questions about University wireless.

For questions regarding your phone service, plan, or device functionality, contact your cellular provider (AT&TSprintT-MobileVerizon, etc.).

Responsibilities

To keep the network speedy for everyone, all residents should follow the Residential Network User Agreement. By accessing the University network, residents are agreeing to the terms of the agreement below.
