Student Security Monitors (SM’s) are student employees of the University of Minnesota Police Department. No experience is necessary; all training is provided and paid. Applicants must pass a complete background check prior to employment.
Security Monitors are the eyes and ears of the Police, identifying and reporting possible criminal activity. Monitors enforce campus and building specific rules and policies.Security Monitors are a proactive presence, discouraging criminals before they act and help reduce risks to people and property. Maintenance problems such as malfunctioning lights or inoperable phones must be identified and reported. This is a zero physical intervention position. The U of M Police Department does not ask or want employees to physically intervene in possible criminal activity. Security Monitors do not make arrests or detain suspects.
