Student Utility Worker

Keep your building working great!

Student Utility Workers assist mechanics with the maintenance and repair of building components including plumbing, windows, doors, and other work orders; operate hand tools, power tools, and snow removal equipment; change light bulbs and restock supplies; organize and clean maintenance shop and mechanical spaces; make minor repairs to small equipment such as vacuum cleaners; move furniture and collect trash; use cleaning equipment and cleaning chemicals as assigned.

The pay rate is $11 per hour.

Qualifications

Must be U of M Undergraduate Student enrolled with a minimum of 6 credit hours. Prefer someone who is mechanically inclined.  Must be able to read and understand English. Must be punctual, reliable and have the ability to work with people.

Candidates must be able to follow written and oral instructions and have a knowledge of common hand and power tools. Knowledge of building mechanical repairs and previous mechanical experience are helpful but not required.

Job Duties

35% assists general mechanic with the routine maintenance and repair of building components such as plumbing accessories; window glass, screens, doors, locks from work orders.  

65% work independently performing routine maintenance to building such as changes light bulbs, restock supplies, organize and clean maintenance shop and mechanical spaces. Makes minor repairs to small equipment such as vacuum cleaners. Moves furniture, collects trash. Uses cleaning equipment and cleaning chemicals as assigned.  Operates hand & power tools and snow removal equipment.

Work 15-20 hours per week. Must be available for early morning and late afternoon snow removal as needed. 

Staff Safety

Following University Sunrise Plan and public health guidance, we are working to support our staff so they can work as safely as possible while maintaining protective measures to slow the spread of COVID-19. 

Staff will be required to wear face coverings (provided if needed), hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies will be provided in workspaces, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting will be conducted in high-touch areas, and staff should conduct self-checks for fever prior to each shift and report any illness to their supervisor.
