Communications Intern

The Housing & Residential Life Marketing and Communications team is looking for a motivated Communications Intern to assist with the creation and production of high-quality, high-impact content that presents a compelling image of the people, activities, and environments of Housing & Residential Life. 

This is a great opportunity to build up your portfolio and gain valuable professional experience as part of a fun and supportive group! Get involved in team meetings, collaborate with other Communications and Graphic/Multimedia Design Interns, generate new ideas and angles for storytelling, and develop new skills. 


  • $16.75 per hour
  • 10-20 hours/week during the school year, up to 40 hours/week during semester breaks

  • Plan, produce and proofread innovative high-quality written content for print materials, website, email marketing, and social media channels covering a variety of topics including, but not limited to: 
    -Marketing for HRL spaces, staff, events, and  initiatives
    -In-hall programs, events, and communications in collaboration with Residence Director staff
    -Materials and support for Conference & Event Services team and summer groups
  • Assist in maintenance of social media channels, including TikTok, and participate in the development of multimedia/creative content (dependent upon skillset).
  • Conduct market research, data collection and analytics, including campus and community partnership opportunities.
  • Serve as a Brand Ambassador, including tabling events and cross-training with other HRL interns.
  • General office duties such as copying, filing, delivery of materials, data entry, archiving, and other duties as assigned.



  • Must be a registered undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota in English, writing studies, journalism or communication studies or any related field
  • Availability to maintain a regular schedule of 10-20 hours/week during the academic year 
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, and communication skills
  • Highly skilled, persuasive writer and collaborative self-starter 
  • Attention to detail, especially committed to accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google products
  • Reliability to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously


  • Both work-study and non work-study students will be considered, but work-study is preferred
  • Sophomore or junior 
  • Have lived or worked in University housing
  • Understanding of writing for marketing, social media, and the web
  • Experience using Drupal content management system or other web editing software
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud products
  • Digital creative skills (graphic design, photography, videography, etc.) – provide samples if applicable 
  • Availability to work up to 40 hours/week during semester breaks (Spring, Summer, Winter)
