Incoming Student Housing Application Information

We are so excited to welcome you to the University of Minnesota! As you imagine what your first year experience will look like, we’re thrilled to know you plan to stay on-campus. University of Minnesota Housing assignments are made based on the date we receive your Housing Application Fee.

The information provided on your application serves as our guide to assign you a space that most closely matches your preferences. This includes roommate, Living Learning Community (LLC), building, and room type.

Apply early! You don’t have to wait until you are admitted or committed to attend the University of Minnesota to apply. Applying early puts you in a better position to be placed in your preferred buildings or room types. All you need to do is submit the non-refundable $75 Housing Application Fee.

Pro tip: Application changes are accepted until May 15! You can update preferences as much as you want without impacting your original application date. Many students will revisit their application up to 5 times to make changes or add information!

Key dates for incoming students

November

The Housing Application opens each year in early November for new first-year students. We can't guarantee you’ll get the space you want, but we can give you some advice: submit your application fee as soon as possible to increase your odds! You do not need to wait until you've been admitted or confirmed your enrollment. It costs $75 to submit the Housing application, and applying early puts you in the best position to get assigned to one of your top preferences.

Pro tip: Your housing application date is one of the first factors we look at when making assignments.

Making changes won't affect the initial application date we use when making assignments. You can log back into your application and make updates until May 15, so apply early and return later to add details such as a roommate group or LLC preference.

Application Checklist

Get organized before applying.

We are so excited to welcome you to University of Minnesota Twin Cities housing! Make sure you have your University of Minnesota login information (Internet ID and password), Student ID upon receipt of your application, and credit or debit card ready. Your student ID can be found in an email sent to you from the Admissions team.

The tips below walk you through each page of the application. Remember, you can come back to the application to refine or change your preferences until May 15. Making changes does not impact the original date you started your application.

Contact Housing & Residential Life if you have any questions.

1: Housing Payment

Your $75 non-refundable housing payment confirms your application. Later in the spring, a $200 housing guarantee payment is required to hold your space in University housing, and it will be applied to your fall housing charges.

2: Housing Contract

As with any lease, your housing contract is a legally binding contract. Please take the time to review the housing contract. You may also view the contract online. If you are under 18, you will need a parent/guardian to sign the contract as a step of the application.

3: Meal Plan

You must indicate a meal plan preference. Meal plans are required for students living in residence halls. Students living in our apartment communities can opt-out of this selection after receiving their housing assignment, but we require that everyone select a meal plan in case you are not assigned to an apartment.

4: Living Learning Communities

We have more than 30 Living Learning Communities (LLCs) available to our residents. These communities provide a unique living experience with no additional fees. Some LLCs will fill up before the priority deadline of March 1. Many programs use the housing application date to create a priority list, and each LLC has a limited number of participants.

Some LLCs require both roommates to be a part of the Living Learning Community. If you enter a mutual roommate request and that person does not select the same LLC within their own housing application, we may not be able to assign you together.

Note: If you receive an assignment to a selected LLC, your building and room type are determined by the location of that community.

5: Building & Room Type

You can select many preferences for your building and room type. Selecting more preferences will help us get you as close as possible to your building and/or room type request.

6: Roommate Search

If you already know of a specific person you want to live with, you can search for them (by Internet ID) and send them a request to accept.

If you want to search for a compatible roommate, you will need to fill out a short questionnaire about your living preferences. Once completed, use Roommate Search to find compatible roommates to invite to your roommate group.

Pro Tip: check back often! Roommate Search is constantly updated with more profiles as new students apply for housing.

Gender Open Housing

This option is focused on creating an inclusive environment where students can live together regardless of sex, gender identity, and/or gender expression. Note: Non-binary students may choose from all housing locations, including areas that are not part of Gender Open Housing.

Visit our Gender Open Housing page for details and/or select "YES" in your application if you are interested in this option.
