New for Fall 2026
All students in the Social Justice Action LLC enroll in a 3-credit course that meets two liberal education requirements and provides the foundation for the discussions and programs of the Living Learning Community.
In this course, you will learn theory & develop your own Personal Leadership Philosophy. You will:
- Ask "Where do ideas about leadership come from?" and "What kind of leader do I want to grow into?"
- Learn leadership theories and tools to analyze social systems
- Apply critical thinking skills to your own leadership practice
“LEAD 1961W was much more than I expected... it shaped my understanding of leadership and how I see the world around me. It allowed me to be critical of my own thoughts and identify how I can improve my own ideas of life. And the professor was the best I’ve had so far.”
Benefits of LEAD 1961W include:
- Flexible scheduling: We offer many class times every semester, including asynchronous online options. LLC students can take any available class time offered fall semester.
- Maximize credits: Complete two Liberal Education requirements in one class: Writing Intensive and Civic Life & Ethics.
- Small community feel: With a cap of 24 students, dedicated instructors and intentional course design, you can build genuine relationships with peers and mentors in an interactive, supportive environment.
- For any undergraduate: LEAD is part of the Office of Undergraduate Education, and is designed to benefit students of any major or year in school.
- The start of a minor: This course is the first step toward the Leadership Minor—a 4-course, 1-elective minor that complements any major on campus. There is no obligation to take the Leadership Minor, but you will be 20% finished by taking this course!
As a member of the Social Justice Action Living Learning Community, you commit to the following to ensure program completion and secure your spot in the LLC:
- Work with your academic advisor during summer orientation to register for LEAD 1961W during any class time, including online, in Fall 2026
- Complete LEAD 1961W
- Participate in monthly meetings from September to April
Students who do not participate in the LLC programming may be removed from the LLC experience.
