About

Pillsbury Court features 48 townhouses for faculty/staff and their families to live during the transition to the Twin Cities. Located on the site of the Pillsbury mansion (home of University presidents from 1911 to 1963), we are pleased to offer this family-oriented housing facility to faculty and staff who are new to the University of Minnesota.

Each three-level townhouse contains two bedrooms and one bathroom on three floors of living space.

First floor: Comfortable living room opening onto a private patio through sliding glass doors
Second floor: Two bedrooms and a bathroom
Basement level: Family room and laundry/utility room

Eligibility

Pillsbury Court is a transitional housing option offered by the University's Department of Housing & Residential Life to provide an opportunity for eligible employees new to the Twin Cities area to become familiar with different residential areas before deciding on a more permanent residence.

Applicants must carry a 67-100% time appointment for a minimum of nine (9) months.
Applicants must be paid through the University of Minnesota's payroll, regardless of source of funding. Approval to waive the criteria may be granted under special circumstances.
Appointment held may not be a "Without Salary" appointment.
Employees currently living in the Twin Cities area for a period longer than 18 months are not eligible. Former graduate students or professionals-in-training having accepted a position as included under Priority 1 or 2 below are exempt from this criteria.

There are three priority categories from which decisions on housing assignments are based. Eligibility is further defined by additional appointment criteria as noted below.

Priority 1:

Regular Faculty
- Tenured and Tenure-Track appointment types
Academic Professional Employees
- Continuous and Probationary appointment types

Priority 2:

Term Faculty
- Contract Faculty (Annual Renewable Contract, Clinical Scholar, Medical School and Yearly, Medical School, and Multiple-Year Contract appointment types)
- Temporary Faculty (Temporary appointment type)
- Visiting Faculty (Visiting appointment type)
Academic Professional and Administrative Employees (not Professionals-in-Training)
- Academic Administrators (Annual Renewable Contract and Multiple-Year Contract appointment types)
- Academic Professionals (Annual Renewable Contract and Multiple-Year Contract appointment types)

Priority 3:

Academic Professional and Administrative Employees (Professionals-in-Training)
- Professionals-in-Training (Number of Years Restricted appointment type)
Regular faculty or academic professional or administrative employees as described under Priority 1 and 2 officially retired from the University who live out of the area and are retired under retiree status for a period of time
- Retiree (Retiree appointment type)

Additional Information

Once the online application is complete, Housing & Residential Life will verify your eligibility with the Office of Human Resources before putting you in an appropriate waiting list category. Unit offers are typically given 1 - 2 months in advance of the desired occupancy date.

Resident Safety Tips

Child Proofing

Do not let your children play on the playground unsupervised.
Small pin holes and screw holes inside the apartment are acceptable, so screws can be used to install child safety gates and secure furniture/equipment.
Outlet covers are encouraged. Avoid using plugs that are inserted into the outlet as they can cause the outlet to become loose.

Door Security

Keep your front unit door locked with the deadbolt at all times.
Never prop open your front unit door.
Always use your peephole to confirm who’s at your door before opening it.
Do not install chains or other locking devices that can impede egress.
Storm doors and screens are not secure, and should not be used as a security method.

Patio Safety

Do not block your patio gate or sliding patio door.
Do not store valuables in your patio.
Exercise caution when using a grill or other outdoor cooking appliances on your patio.
Hornets and wasps may form nests in the fencing. Residents are allowed to use a foaming wasp killer spray on the nest.
Use the patio light in the evening.
Keep the patio well maintained, pull weeds, and keep furniture organized against the fencing.

Vehicle Safety

Keep your vehicle locked and the windows rolled up at all times
Do not store valuables in your vehicle.
Report if any exterior lights in the parking lot are not working by submitting a Fix It Request .

Walking

Always be aware of your surroundings.
Only walk in well-traveled and well-lit areas.
Avoid wearing headphones, especially at night.
Avoid using your phone or other devices that distract you.
Keep property (purses, backpacks, etc.) tightly closed and close to your body.
Use the 624-WALK Service whenever possible (coming to and from campus).

If you call 911, please tell the operator that you live at Pillsbury Court on the University of Minnesota campus.

You should call 911:

If you witness a crime in progress.
If someone needs help or immediate medical attention.
If you smell gas (natural gas).
If an apartment is on fire.
